Annual update of how each state stands on legislative issues affecting advanced nursing practice
Article Abstract:
Nurse practitioners (NPs) must protect their role in providing health care. The rise of managed care and continuing efforts by doctors to maintain control of health care delivery threaten NP autonomy. NPs must insist on nurses regulating nursing practice, monitor licensing regulations, document the value of NP care, take a role in determining health maintenance organization structure, and advocate for quality care. A comparison of state regulations reveals wide varieties in scope of practice.

Annual update of how each state stands on legislative issues affecting advanced nursing practice
Article Abstract:
An update on the status of advanced practice nursing (APN) on a state by state basis has been presented. These surveys highlight how the legal system in each state recognizes APNs, how they are supervised, and what the education requirements are. An itemization of who can prescribe medications, what types of medications they can prescribe, who grants prescriptive authority, and how third party payers handle APNs in each state is also included.

Annual update of how each state stands on legislative issues affecting advanced nursing practice
Article Abstract:
Most US states have nursing practitioner title protection without requiring supervision by a physician. Nearly one-third of the states have title protection while requiring a supervising physician, and fewer than one-fourth of the states either have nurse practitioner title protection authorized by nursing boards, or have no nurse practitioners.
