Late third-trimester treatment of rectovaginal group B streptococci with benzathine penicillin G
Article Abstract:
Treating pregnant women who test positive for group B streptococci with benzathine penicillin G may reduce the risk that they will transmit the bacterial infection to their babies. This was the conclusion of a study of 78 pregnant women who tested positive, half of whom were given the antibiotic.

Obstetricians should test any group B streptococcal bacteria they isolate from a pregnant woman for susceptibility to antibiotics. This is necessary because these bacteria are developing resistance to some antibiotics.

Effectiveness of a rescue dose of antenatal betamethasone after an initial single course

Giving a second dose of corticosteroids to pregnant women at risk of premature birth who received the initial dose before 28 weeks' gestation appears to reduce the risk of respiratory distress syndrome in the baby. Corticosteroids help the baby's lungs mature.
