Antibiotic treatment in preterm premature rupture of membranes and neonatal morbidity: a metaanalysis
Article Abstract:
Newborns may have fewer long term health problems if their mothers receive antibiotics after experiencing premature rupture of membranes. Researchers conducted a metaanalysis of seven medical studies covering 657 patients on the effect of antibiotic therapy for premature rupture of membranes on infant outcome. Antibiotic therapy alone was found to improve the outcome of infants born to mothers whose membranes ruptured prematurely during pregnancy. The risk of newborn blood infection dropped 68% when antibiotics were given prenatally, and the risk of brain hemorrhage dropped by 50%. Antibiotic therapy was not found to raise the risk of intestinal ulceration in the newborns. The death rate for newborns born after premature rupture of membranes, although low, did not improve with antibiotic therapy.

Cervical length and dilatation of the internal cervical os detected by vaginal ultrasonography as markers for preterm delivery: a systematic review
Article Abstract:
Vaginal ultrasound imaging appears to be effective in detecting women in premature labor who are at risk of premature delivery. Vaginal ultrasound uses a probe inserted into the vagina to measure the length of the cervix. A shorter than normal cervix is a risk factor for premature delivery.
