Arabidopsis to zebrafish: a commentary on "Rosetta Stone" model systems in the biological sciences
Article Abstract:
Rosetta Stone model systems are used as key species for studying the molecular patterns of basic processes of different types of organisms because they are mistaken to be universal model organisms. The reasons for the use of the species, which includes Drosophila and E. coli, are explained by Hans Krebs using the August Krogh principle. However, recent use of 'model species' systems have become fashionable among researchers especially among biologists to make researcher more attractive to readers. The consequences of the inappropriate use of key species are discussed.

Longest and dullest scientific books of the twentieth century
Article Abstract:
'The Human Genome Book', scheduled for publishing in 2005, and Gregory Chudnovskys and David Chudnovskys' 'The Book of Pi' are the dullest and longest scientific books of the 20th century. Gregory and David aim at estimating the maximum decimal expansion of pi, but the book fails to offer any intellectual insights about the patterns of pi. Numerous scientists are writing a three billion letter text for the 'Human Genome Book', which aims at discovering the full sequence of human DNA. Financial and other controversies surrounding the book are discussed.

Microbes, fleas, and the "vast chain of being."
Article Abstract:
Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's invention of the microscope and discovery of microbes have greatly influenced biology, medicine and literature. Among the literary geniuses who made references to microscopic objects are J.B.S. Haldane, Augustus de Morgan and Thomas Shadwell. It also said that Marjorie Nicholson could not have written Gulliver's Travels prior to Leeuwenhoek's invention. Furthermore, Alexandre Yersin's discovery of the cause of the bubonic plague will not be possible without microscopy.
