Physicians should carefully evaluate the claims handling history, policy term and physician involvement in settlement decision making when purchasing malpractice insurance. Claims handling procedures are one of the most important factors; physicians should be able to influence the decision whether or not to settle a claim. Physicians part of a group practice or managed care plan may also need other types of insurance, such as directors and officers or errors and omissions.
