Assessing the long-term effect of a surface penetrating sealant
Article Abstract:
Sealant application might lessen the wear rates of composite restorations. The long-term effect on interfacial staining, clinical wear, marginal integrity and surface texture was assessed in this study. Multiple microcracks and apparent fracture lines are often found on the occlusal surface of posterior composite resin restorations. The surface-penetrating sealant used in this experiment was formulated to control viscosity and wetting. This technique for sealing the surface is simple and requires little additional time by the clinician. It was determined that sealant application may reduce the wear rates of composite restorations. Adjacent material probably is lost to wear over a period of two years. Biannual application of the sealant could possibly improve its effectiveness.

In vitro wear device for determining posterior composite wear
Article Abstract:
A three-boded wear testing device can be used to determine how fast a composite resin will wear when it is used to fill a cavity. This device mimics the action of food on teeth during chewing. Samples of resin can be placed in the device, which can produce the equivalent of three years of wear in just a few days. Researchers used such a device to measure the wear on several types of composite resin. After 400,000 cycles, electron microscopy showed wear on most of the samples.

Porcelain esthetics for the 21st century
Article Abstract:
Advances in dental porcelains are discussed, including all-ceramic systems, low-fusing porcelain, leucite, fluorescence and opalescence, all-ceramic cores, and luting agents. Composite-based resin luting systems and low-fusing porcelains allow dentists to create strong, esthetic, and functional restorations.
