Assessment of a Geographically Targeted Field Intervention on Gonorrhea Incidence in Two New York State Counties
Article Abstract:
Providing services to infected people in a specific geographic area may be beneficial in reducing the incidence of gonorrhea. These core geographic areas may be responsible for the highest transmission rates. In 1984, one New York State county began targeting infected people from a geographic core area for treatment. Over time, the risk of gonorrhea in this county decreased by 61%. This occurred despite the fact that only 30%-40% of the patients were interviewed for contacts annually during the intervention period. In a county that did not adopt this technique, the relative risk dropped 50% even though they interviewed 60%-70% of the patients.

Rates of risk factors for trichomoniasis among pregnant inmates in New York City
Article Abstract:
Many pregnant prisoners in New York City are infected with Trichomonas vaginalis. Researchers interviewed 213 pregnant prisoners who were attending a prenatal clinic and tested them for Trichomonas vaginalis, which causes an infection known as trichomoniasis. Forty-seven percent of the women tested positive and risk factors included older age, crack use, prostitution, and a history of other sexually transmitted diseases, notably syphilis and HIV.

Bayes' Theorem-Based Assessment of VDRL Syphilis Screening Miss Rates
Article Abstract:
The VRDL test for syphilis may fail to detect a significant number of late active infections in older patients. Researchers evaluated the sensitivity and accuracy to two common tests for syphilis among 24,863 people attending public health clinics. The VRDL alone only detected 18% of syphilis cases. Eighty-two percent of patients who tested negative on the VRDL test were diagnosed with the disease by the TPHA test.
