Peripheral body fat has a protective role on bone mineral density in elderly women
Article Abstract:
The role of peripheral body fat in preventing bone mineral density loss in aged women was investigated. A sample of 22 institutionalized independent elderly women were recruited in a case-control study to determine whether bone mineral density is lower in women living in homes for the aged than their free dwelling counterparts. Results showed that institutionalized elderly women have lower bone mineral density compared to free dwelling control subjects. Lower bone mineral density was found to be the main risk factor for fracture among institutionalized elderly women.

SAMe for depression
Article Abstract:
More research is needed before the dietary supplement SAMe can be recommended to treat depression. SAMe is the abbreviation for S-adenosyl-methionine, which occurs naturally in the body. A few clinical trials have evaluated SAMe for depression and found it more effective than a placebo and as effective as some other antidepressants. However, the studies only lasted for a few weeks and studied too few patients. The FDA has not approved SAMe for the treatment of depression.
