Sporadic meningococcal disease in adults: results of a 5-year population-based study
Article Abstract:
A five-year study of sporadic meningococcal disease among adults in Atlanta points out the need for awareness of typical and atypical symptoms in adults. Meningococcal infection is caused by Neisseria meningitidis and has a 10% to 20% mortality rate. Researchers performed a study of meningococcal disease in the adult population of Atlanta from 1988 to 1993. Adults comprised one third of all cases of sporadic meningococcal infection. Typical symptoms such as rash and meningitis were missing in over half of the adults, but most adults had upper respiratory symptoms. Meningococcal bacteria were found in the blood of all adults, which may explain why rashes were infrequent. Familiarity with adult symptoms of the disease may improve treatment and infection control.

Epidemiology of rodent bites and prediction of rat infestation in New York City
Article Abstract:
Rodent bite risk in New York City may be stratified based on the actual rates of bites. Researchers used statistical and spatial models to generate predictions of rodent infestation in five boroughs of New York City. Of the 53 geocoded cases of all reported rodent bites, thirty cases had occurred in blocks determined to be at high risk for rodent bites. The remaining cases were considered either intermediate risk or low risk.
