Impact of contraception on gynecologic cancers
Article Abstract:
Further research is needed to confirm the links between contraceptives and the development of gynecologic cancers. Much of the research linking the use of oral contraceptives (OCs) to the development of breast cancer has been contradictory. However, most studies have not found a strong link between the two. It seems that OCs may offer some protection against the development of benign breast disease which may be related to later development of breast cancer. The evidence on the link between OCs and cervical cancer is also contradictory, especially because so many variables are thought to play a part in the manifestation of cervical cancer. OCs have been shown to protect women from cancer of the lining of the uterus and to reduce risks of ovarian cancer development. Drug therapy for cancer may negatively affect a fetus especially during the first trimester of pregnancy. OCs, IUDs or implantable progestins offer effective means of reversible contraception for women undergoing chemotherapy.

Vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia: risk factors for persistence, recurrence, and invasion and its management
Article Abstract:
Most cases of vaginal cancer may be treatable, but a small percentage may recur and become invasive. Researchers reviewed the records and outcomes of 94 patients with vaginal cancer diagnosed over a 10-year period. Fifty-two patients (70%) experienced remission after one treatment. Eighteen more patients (24%) experienced remission after chemosurgery or removal of the upper vagina. Four patients (5%) experienced invasive recurrence despite careful follow-up. Risk factors for invasion were multifocal lesions and anogenital neoplastic syndrome. Vaginal cancer is a rare form of lower genital cancer.
