Association of Apolipoprotein A Phenotypes and Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein Immune Complexes in Children
Article Abstract:
Blood fat profiles in young children may indicate their risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Researchers measured apolipoprotein (apo) A, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and other factors in 35 children aged 9-11 years. Forty-six percent of the children had a relative who had a heart attack before age 55. The presence of antibodies to oxidized LDL and other immune complexes was strongly associated with apo(A) levels, the type of apo(A), and other risk factors for coronary artery disease.

Provider-Reported Illness and Absence Due to Illness Among Children Attending Child-care Homes and Centers in San Diego, Calif
Article Abstract:
Young children receiving daycare in child-care homes may be more likely to become ill than children attending daycare centers. Researchers surveyed child-care providers about illness and absences among children under their care. Children younger than one year, white children, and those in small child-care homes had the most illness, while one-year-olds, Hispanics, and children attending daycare centers were most often absent. Most illnesses and absences were the result of respiratory infections.
