Association of Managed Care Market Share and Health Expenditures for Fee-for-Service Medicare Patients
Article Abstract:
Managed care can impact patients even if they are not enrolled in a managed care program. Researchers compared government expenditures on Medicare patients in a traditional fee-for-service plan in areas of the US with a high penetration of managed care and those with a low penetration. In areas where managed care had a large share of the healthcare market, spending on fee-for-service patients was less compared with areas with few managed care plans. An increase in market share from 10% to 20% led to a 2% drop in Part A expenditures and a 1.5% drop in Part B expenditures.

How to use an article on economic analysis of clinical practice: what are the results and will they help me in caring for my patients?
Article Abstract:
Guidelines are presented to help physicians apply the results of economic analyses of treatment options to their own patients. These analyses are frequently performed to determine the cost of a treatment compared to its benefits. Physicians must determine whether the costs were accurately measured and whether their own patients are similar to the patients studied. The costs of a treatment may also differ from the costs identified in the study. Hospital committees may find that the introduction of an expensive treatment may divert resources from other treatments.
