Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a comprehensive review
Article Abstract:
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease is a progressive degenerative disease that affects about 1 in 100,000 persons. Symptoms include spasticity, fasciculations, atrophy or cramps in muscles; clumsiness; dysarthria; and dysphagia. ALS's cause is not known, and only palliative treatments are available. Management by a multidisciplinary team is recommended, incorporating patient and family education, psychotherapy or support groups, respiratory therapy, physical and speech therapy, drug therapy, and possibly surgery when dysphagia develops.

Patient resources
Article Abstract:
The Internet offers a variety of patient education materials and clinicians should be aware of this helpful resource as well as practical considerations such as saving, printing, and copyright requirements. Patient education information can help patients manage their illness and help clinicians better understand their patients' challenges. Searching the World Wide Web (WWW) requires a Web browser such as Netscape Navigator and a search engine such as Hotbot in which topics and key words can be searched. Some useful WWW sites are provided.
