Autism
Article Abstract:
Autism is a form of developmental disorder that is usually first seen in toddlers. It is characterized by communication difficulties and antisocial behavior. Young autistic children do not know how to play and this can serve as a useful means of diagnosing the condition. Surveys have found that autism strikes about 4 out of every 10,000 children. It has many causes, which can occur during pregnancy or after childbirth. Studies of twins show that it has a genetic component. It is best diagnosed by behavioral assessments and developmental progress. The best treatment is remedial education. Psychotropic drugs may be helpful for some symptoms.

Lack of benefit of a single dose of synthetic human secretin in the treatment of autism and pervasive developmental disorder
Article Abstract:
A single dose of secretin does not appear to benefit children with autism. Secretin is a human hormone that stimulates the pancreas. Many parents of autistic children became interested in secretin when it appeared to benefit a three-year-old autistic child. Autistic children have difficulty socializing and communicating and often engage in unusual repetitive behaviors. Researchers tested a single dose of secretin in 56 autistic children, have of whom received a placebo, or inactive substance. There were no significant changes in behavior between the children who received secretin and those who received a placebo.
