Autoantibodies predicting the outcome of rheumatoid arthritis: evaluation in two subsets of patients according to severity of radiographic damage
Article Abstract:
The presence of antikeratin antibodies (AKA) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may predict severe progression of the disease. In 86 patients with RA, half exhibited severe joint damage and the others showed limited damage. The presence of autoantibodies useful in the diagnosis of RA, such as rheumatoid factor and AKA, were compared to the extent of the joint damage observed. Of five antibodies tested, only AKA was found to be significantly predictive for severe disease. It was detected in 60.5% of the patients with severe symptoms compared to 27.9% of the patients with milder symptoms.
