BRCA1 mutations in women attending clinics that evaluate the risk of breast cancer
Article Abstract:
It may be premature to test all women with breast cancer or a family history of breast cancer for mutations of the BRCA genes. These mutations have been linked to breast and ovarian cancer. Researchers tested blood samples from 263 women with breast cancer for BRCA1 mutations. Overall, 16% of the women with a family history of breast cancer had a mutation. This is much lower than the rate predicted by other studies. Among women with a family history of breast cancer but not ovarian cancer, only 7% had a mutation. Families with early-onset cancer, breast and ovarian cancer and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry were more likely to have the mutations.

Breast and ovarian cancer
Article Abstract:
Research on gene mutations that cause some types of breast and ovarian cancer is reviewed. Topics include susceptibility, genes that increase susceptibility, the BRCA genes, use of the human genome sequence, whole-genome approaches, array-based comparative genome hybridization, and the treatment of people who have an inherited susceptibility to breast and ovarian cancer.

Breast cancer genetics: what we know and what we need
Article Abstract:
Research presented concerns how genetic and environmental factors can increase mutations in genes associated with breast cancer. A model of breast cancer susceptibility is presented, focusing on mutations in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2.
