Article Abstract:
A case study describes how the right assessment gave an elderly woman the confidence to leave a nursing home after an accident and return to her sheltered accommodation. She had decided against returning to sheltered accommodation and chose a residential home, but encountered difficulties which culminated in a fall. At a nursing home she was assessed by a senior nurse, and a named nurse and physiotherapist assessed here walking abilities. She progressed following a rehabilitation programme and felt able to return to sheltered accommodation.

Back from the twilight zone
Article Abstract:
A nursing assistant's experience of treatment for liver failure on an intensive care unit helped him understand the fear, confusion and discomfort experienced by patients and caused him to call for better communication on the part of nursing staff. Nursing staff should explain procedures to patients to remove some causes of confusion, and should also be aware of the patient's body language as this may communicate something of importance. The patient found the provision of a wipe-clean board and pen were particularly helpful.
