Hospitalization of patients infected with active TB in New York State, 1987-1992: the effect of the HIV epidemic
Article Abstract:
Patients discharged from New York State hospitals infected with HIV and tuberculosis (TB) increased 270% between 1987 and 1992. The increase represents 1,573 discharged patients in 1987 to 5,825 patients in 1992 and includes a growing number of women, drug users and minority patients. Patients with HIV are at risk for developing TB because of their compromised immune systems and the TB population is seeing a significant rise in HIV infections. Integration of educational and primary care programs for both HIV and TB patients may be necessary in treating both epidemics.

Descriptive epidemiology of HIV/AIDS in Japan, 1985-1994
Article Abstract:
The AIDS epidemic in Japan appears to be unique in many ways. As of the end of 1994, only 889 AIDS cases and 3,233 cases of HIV infection had been reported. A little over half of these cases have occurred in hemophiliacs. Testing of intravenous drug users reveals little sign of the disease in this group. Of the 1,441 cases of HIV infection in non-hemophiliacs, more than half occur in foreigners living in Japan. The incidence of HIV infection is five times higher in men than women and heterosexual sex is the most common means of transmission.
