Minilaparotomy for the ambulatory management of ovarian cysts
Article Abstract:
The minilaparotomy surgical procedure may be successfully used on an outpatient basis to remove ovarian cysts. Researchers performed minilaparotomies, a surgical procedure using small abdominal incisions, on 24 patients with 28 ovarian cysts. All of the patients left the hospital on the same day as the surgery, and none were readmitted. One patient experienced retention of urine, which was managed with a catheter on an outpatient basis. The average procedure lasted 45 minutes. The cost of minilaparotomy was estimated to be $140, as opposed to $1,230 for traditional abdominal surgery. The influence of managed care may mean that qualified patients may receive lower cost minilaparotomies to satisfy cost control measures.
