Although drug representatives may fail to obtain more than small samples, direct contact with the company can result in adequate supplies. Positive follow-ups can ensure that drug companies respond to physician requests.

Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories' Norplant contraceptive implant has proven very effective, but lawsuits and negative publicity have reduced demand for the product. Critics claim that Norplant causes very uncomfortable side effects and that removal of the implant can cause complications. Wyeth-Ayerst has acknowledged that sales of the product have dropped significantly.
