Barriers to wearing bicycle safety helmets in the Netherlands
Article Abstract:
Children in the Netherlands may not wear bicycle safety helmets because they cause physical discomfort and elicit negative social reactions. During a six week period, 233 primary school children in the Netherlands were asked to wear helmets when cycling. Afterward, researchers surveyed the children to determine what behavioral factors affected helmet use. Sixty-eight percent of children always or almost always wore helmets during the study period. Although 33% planned to continue wearing helmets, only eight students were wearing helmets three months later. Students most often cited sensibility and safety reasons for wearing helmets. Teasing was the most popular reason for halting helmet use. Students reported that helmets lacked comfort and helmet storage sites were often unavailable. Negative social pressure including stares, taunts, and nagging influenced some students to abandon their helmets, despite the strongly positive social norms about helmet-wearing.

The Social Security safety net
Article Abstract:
The long-term future of Social Security can be assured with modest reforms. The health aspects of Social Security are as socially significant as its economic integrity. For many aged Americans, especially women, Social Security is the only barrier between them and poverty. When more citizens prepare for retirement and awareness of retirement needs grows due to the planned expansion of the Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate Statement, the future of US health will be secure.

Bike like a champ
Article Abstract:
Competitive cyclist Carolyn Stanek recommends to cyclists certain safety measures she learned from experience. Enthusiasts should select bicycles that best suit their physique, especially those that can prevent leg or knee problems. Before cycling, they should don proper safety gear and equip their bikes with safety accessories like lights. Cyclists should anticipate the moves of oncoming motorists and be prepared for hazards caused by unfavorable weather conditions.
