The drug crisis: hearing and heeding its message
Article Abstract:
The devastations caused by the use of illegal drugs can be easily listed, but few inroads have been made toward eliminating the cause of this worldwide problem. The ''war on drugs'' focuses on fighting the symptom, ignoring the message that would tune us in to the underlying problems. If drugs like cocaine and speed make people feel ''up'' and ''powerful'', heroin kills ''pain'', and hallucinogenics and alcohol provide a ''release'' and make it easier to ''relate'', what is wrong with the culture that its people have to use drugs to feel these ways? The ''war on drugs'' can't work without a ''war'' on the culture in which they are felt needed. Our success oriented culture causes many to seek artificial ways to attain the fulfillment they need or want. There is not a fast-food approach to a meaningful life, no quick fix for true inner fulfillment. Drugs are attractive when there is no other known way to accept and acknowledge pain, relate to each other, relieve and avoid stress, and feel nurtured and enthused in life. The messages we give our children need to be ones that will empower them to ''just say no'', messages of hope and caring that will offer them an attractive alternative, rather than another empty challenge.
