Bedside manner misses the point
Article Abstract:
Popular commentators in the UK are bemoaning a decline in basic nursing skills. They blame it on the pursuit of higher education in the nursing profession. This criticism is unfair, and it is demoralizing for student nurses. Older forms of training, in which new nurses were supposed to pick up skills from more experienced colleagues on the ward, did not prepare nurses adequately for the responsibilities of the profession. It is other factors, including under-financing and poor managerial decision-making, which have led to falling standards in the nursing profession.

Nurses are sick of being abused
Article Abstract:
The media play an important role in continuing the cycle of abuse which UK nurses have to put up with on a daily basis. Nurses are often portrayed in a victim role through drama and television programmes, unable to cope in stressful situations and having to turn to higher authorities for help and guidance. The daily work routine of many nurses brings them into constant contact with situations where both physical and verbal abuse may occur. Witnessing abuse can also be part of their daily lives.

Different from the average student
