Bereavement support for people with learning disabilities
Article Abstract:
The story of a young man with learning disabilities who had to cope with the death of his father illustrates the importance of supporting people with these problems and enabling them to grieve in an appropriate manner. The staff of the residential home in which the young man lived consulted Buckman's six-step protocol and a local bereavement care project as part of their approach. They discussed procedures with the young man, encouraged his involvement in the rituals associated with death and supported him in coming to terms with his loss. However, they allowed him to make his own choices.

The effectiveness of services for people with learning disabilities
Article Abstract:
A UK health trust looked at the means of measuring effectiveness in services for the learning disabled. The trust set up a pilot project using the US-developed Personal Outcome Measures. The pilot group interviewed eight service users to discover their priorities within a range of outcome areas and the extent to which these expressed desires were being realised. Results indicated that service to the learning disabled continues to be influenced by the services available, as only a small percentage of the users' desired outcomes were being realised.
