Statewide assessment of a behavioral intervention to reduce cigarette smoking by pregnant women
Article Abstract:
A recently developed behavior modification program appears to be effective in encouraging pregnant women to stop smoking during their pregnancies. Researchers introduced a behavior modification program at 10 prenatal facilities where the smoking prevalence was previously 4% to 85%. Up to 45% of the pregnant women quit smoking during their pregnancy after participating in the program as verified by carbon monoxide testing and patient reports. The program was more effective at facilities where the initial smoking prevalence was high.
