Better health care for people with learning disabilities
Article Abstract:
Health care and health promotion are integral to the NHS and those with learning disabilities should be entitled to the same services as other members of society. However a study of 151 learning disabled people attending a day centre, found that a large majority lacked new types of high levels of medical care and many required medical treatment. Common problems were hypertension, obesity, dental and eye problems. Health promotion programmes for learning disabled people should include medical screening, education and effective communication through informal sessions.

Health care for women with learning disabilities
Article Abstract:
Health care professionals in the Dundee Healthcare NHS Trust, United Kingdom, launched a special clinic in 1994 to cater to the health care needs of women with learning disabilities. This venture was a response to survey findings which demonstrated scope for improvement in services to this client group. The family planning and well-woman clinic aims to be informal, accessible, comprehensive and practical. The overall aims are to provide a needs-led service which enables women with learning disabilities to make informed choices concerning their own health.

Article Abstract:
The UK-based Lord Nelson sailing ship has been specially adapted to allow a crew of 20 disabled people to live and work during a sailing trip, while allowing as much independence as possible. The Jubilee Sailing Trust re-fitted the Lord Nelson in 1986, after the charity's founder Christopher Rudd realised disabled people were being denied the pleasure of tall ship sailing. A specially trained nurse has to accompany the trip to ensure all crew members have access to medical help if required.
