Bill prohibits federal funding for suicide assistance
Article Abstract:
A bill introduced by Rep. Dave Camp would prohibit federal funding for assisted suicide. The bill would also forbid requirements that hospital staff counsel patients about assisted suicide, and would remove malpractice caps in such cases. The bill is thought to be difficult to enforce because physicians could bill Medicaid programs under codes which would obfuscate the nature of the procedure. The Catholic Church is also planning a major campaign to fight the movement to legalize assisted suicide.

Assisted-suicide law still in flux
Article Abstract:
Oregon's Measure 16 physician-assisted-suicide law, passed in 1994, has yet to take effect and is being debated in Oregon's 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Opponents of Measure 16 are concerned about potential abuse of the measure, which they believe puts vulnerable patients at risk and could result in premature initiations of physician-assisted suicide in order to save money. Supporters of Measure 16 argue that overturning a law before it goes into effect negates the public say.

Once again, Oregon voters ponder fate of assisted suicide
Article Abstract:
Oregon residents will be able to vote in Nov 1997 on the physician-assisted suicide measure they voted into law in Nov 1994. Oregon has been the only state to pass such a law which would allow terminally ill patients with less than six months to live to self-administer a lethal dose of medicine they had received from their physician. The law has never been enacted because of opposition.
