Bioequivalence of generic and brand-name levothyroxine products in the treatment of hypothyroidism
Article Abstract:
Most people with hypothyroidism could benefit from taking a generic version of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism is caused by a deficiency of natural thyroid hormones. Researchers tested two brand-name thyroid hormone products and two generic products on 22 women with hypothyroidism to see if all four products were equivalent. All of the women took each product for a six-week period. All four products produced similar levels of thyroid hormone in the body and thus met the FDA standard for bioequivalence. This means that physicians could prescribe the generic hormone, which could save over $300 million.

Triiodothyronine levels in athyreotic individuals during levothyroxine therapy
Article Abstract:
A study to ascertain if patients treated with L[T.sub.4] therapy had lower levels of [T.sub.3] than those with native thyroid function is conducted. Results reveal that L[T.sub.4] therapy alone achieves normal [T.sub.3] levels in patients who had a near-total or total thyroidectomy and administration of [T.sub.3] is not needed to maintain endogenous prethyroidectomy levels.
