Bioethics group re-examines issue of research oversight
Article Abstract:
The National Bioethics Advisory Commission was appointed by US Pres Bill Clinton in 1996 to examine the issue of one national regulatory body to oversee all human research. More stringent oversight of human research was first broached by the President's Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research in 1981. The US Congress is considering such human research legislation in 1997.

Congress weighs ban on cloning; bills differ on research issues
Article Abstract:
Many bills are pending in Congress and state legislatures that would impose bans on human cloning, but they are different from each other in several respects. Each bill has its own definition of cloning, and not all have ban expiration clauses. Some provide exemptions for cloning human embryos which would then be used for research, launching debates similar to those regarding the abortion issue.
