Mr. Gates's summer vacation: a centennial remembrance
Article Abstract:
Frederick T. Gates convinced John D. Rockefeller to invest in medical science after reading a medical text while on vacation in 1897. Gates was a Baptist minister and had become Rockefeller's advisor in 1893. The medical text, Osler's "The Principles and Practice of Medicine", convinced Gates that the United States desperately needed more medical research. His influence led to the establishment of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, the General Education Board, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the International Health Board.
