Born in the USA: How are newborn babies affected by their mothers' use of drugs nursed in specialist units in the USA?
Article Abstract:
There has been an increase in the number of babies affected by mothers' use of drugs. Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a potential outcome of maternal drug use. A sister at the David Morgan Neonatal Unit, Airedale General Hospital, Steeton, travelled to the US where many of the treatments currently used originate. She describes her time at the University of Washington Medical Centre in Seattle, which has a high-risk referral maternity unit. She also describes the lack of facilities and funding at the neonatal unit at Woodhull Medical Centre in Brooklyn, where around half the admissions were linked to maternal use of crack or cocaine.

The pregnancy police
Article Abstract:
There are mixed views in the UK about how to address the problem of pregnant women taking illicit drugs. In UK law, the unborn child does not have a 'legal personality,' and therefore cannot be made a ward of court or be taken into care. However, the foetus is given some protection under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, the Abortion Act 1967 and the Infant Life Preservation Act 1929. There would be repercussions for the freedom of the individual if it were to become an offence to damage a foetus though drugs, alcohol or tobacco.
