A battle in vein: infusion phlebitis
Article Abstract:
Infusion phlebitis, acute inflammation of a vein directly connected with the presence of an intravenous access device, may initially manifest itself only in the form of pain or erythema. However, it can quickly develop into more serious symptoms, and could ultimately cause thrombus formation and pyrexia. The impact of infusion phlebitis varies from patient to patient, and will be determined by the severity of the phlebitic episode. The Visual Infusion Phlebitis score can play a valuable role in prevention and early recognition of this condition.
