Article Abstract:
The evidence base for screening and brief interventions for alcholism delivered by nurses in general hospital medical or surgical wards and A&E departments are summarized. Suggestions on how screening and brief interventions can operate in the hospital environments are also described.

Research suggests one in seven acute hospital admissions is caused by alcohol abuse. Nurses need to accurately assess a patient's alcohol use and, when necessary, provide clear advice and information about reasonable alcohol use.
