The evidence base for tight blood pressure control in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus
Article Abstract:
All patients with type 2, or adult onset, diabetes who also have high blood pressure should take either an ACE inhibitor or a thiazide diuretic to bring their blood pressure down to 135/80. Several studies have shown that blood pressure control can reduce a diabetic's risk of cardiovascular disease. More research will be needed to determine whether it can also prevent some of the other complications of diabetes.

Blood pressure control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus: recommendations from the American College of Physicians
Article Abstract:
People with type 2, or adult onset, diabetes can lower their risk of heart disease, stroke, and early death by controlling their blood pressure. They should take an ACE inhibitor or a thiazide diuretic and should aim for a blood pressure of less than 135/80 if possible. It may be necessary to take more than one antihypertensive drug to achieve this goal.

Effects of blood pressure drugs in patients with diabetes and kidney disease
Article Abstract:
Calcium channel blockers and angiotensin receptor blockers may be equally effective for treating hypertension in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a study of 1,715 patients. In this study, many of the patients had to take three drugs to control their blood pressure. They also had diabetic kidney disease.
