Brief report: Severe infectious mononucleosis-like syndrome and primary human herpesvirus 6 infection in an adult
Article Abstract:
Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) may cause a severe infectious mononucleosis-like syndrome in adults. HHV-6 is a virus that was first identified in AIDS patients and patients with different types of lymphoproliferative disorders. A 43-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with a fever of seven days duration and a rash over his entire body. He also had other symptoms characteristic of mononucleosis. These included swollen lymph nodes, mild enlargement of the spleen and sore throat. A blood test revealed antibodies against HHV-6. HHV-6 DNA was also detected in a blood sample, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, CD4+ T-cells and a sample of skin tissue. An HHV-6 infection was determined to be the cause of the patient's illness.

A relapsing inflammatory syndrome and active human herpesvirus 8 infection
Article Abstract:
A description about an immunocompetent 61-year old woman who was negative for human immunodeficiency virus and who had recurrent human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) infection associated with a relapsing systematic inflammatory syndrome characterized by fever, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, edema and rash is presented. The HHV-8 infection, also known as Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)- associated herpesvirus developed 10 months after the initial clinical presentation.

Expression of human herpesvirus 8 in primary pulmonary hypertension
Article Abstract:
Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) may be responsible for causing pulmonary hypertension in some people, according to a study of 30 patients. Lung tissue biopsy samples from 10 of the 16 patients with primary pulmonary hypertension tested positive for HHV-8. Pathological analysis of the samples revealed similarities with Kaposi's sarcoma tumors on the skin of HIV patients. Kaposi's sarcoma is also linked to HHV-8 infection.
