Brief report: reuse of a transplanted heart
Article Abstract:
The transplanted heart from a recipient who suffered brain death was successfully reused in a second transplant recipient. The heart was from a 20-year-old man who shot and killed himself. The first recipient was a 47-year-old man who had suffered many episodes of heart failure and, at the time of transplant in Dec, 1991, was bedridden. Although the transplanted heart was fully functional, the man never recovered and was diagnosed with brain death 13 days following transplantation. He had consented to donate his organs prior to the operation, and the heart was transplanted a second time to a 58-year-old man who had previously suffered four heart attacks. The second man appears to have fully recovered and has been healthy and active in the year since his operation. Unfortunately, the reuse of transplanted hearts will probably not alleviate the shortage of donor hearts, since brain death in heart-transplant patients is rare.

Genetic analysis of a sarcoma accidentally transplanted from a patient to a surgeon
Article Abstract:
The accidental transplantation of a tumor from a patient into a surgeon indicates that some tumors can elude immune system attack. The 53-year-old surgeon operated on a 32-year-old man with a malignant fibrous histiocytoma in his abdomen. As the surgeon removed the tumor, he injured the palm of his left hand. Five months later, he had developed a swollen mass in the palm, which was surgically removed. Genetic analysis revealed that the tumor was identical to the one removed from the patient. The surgeon's hand had evidence of an inflammatory reaction against the tumor, but it was not rejected.
