Brief report: late improvement in consciousness after post-traumatic vegetative state
Article Abstract:
Recovery of consciousness from a long-term vegetative state may be possible, and should be considered in making treatment decisions. People in a vegetative state are awake but do not respond to their environment or appear to be aware of themselves. An 18-year-old woman was in such a state for over one year following a brain injury. After 15 months she began to respond to commands, regained ability to move, and respond to questions with eye blinks. After five years she was dependent on care, communicated, interacted with caregivers, and often appeared to be in a happy mood. Such improvement was not predictable based on early symptoms. The term "permanent vegetative state" may be inaccurate and unethical. Ethical judgements about providing long-term care for such people will vary depending on who is involved in such decision.

Poison on line - acute renal failure caused by oil of wormwood purchased through the Internet
Article Abstract:
The case of a man who developed kidney failure illustrates the dangers of buying products via the Internet. The 30-year-old man was hospitalized after he became disoriented and began having seizures. A urine test indicated that he had myoglobin in his urine, which is a muscle protein. This led directly to acute kidney failure, which was successfully treated. He claimed that his symptoms began several hours after drinking what he thought was absinthe liquor, which he purchased from a World Wide Web site. The fluid was actually oil of wormwood, from which absinthe liquor is made.
