Britain fights for cleaner skies
Article Abstract:
The UK was known for its air pollution problems stemming from the rapid rise of industry and expansion of highway traffic. However, the UK has adopted legislation to address its air quality problems starting with the Clean Air Act of 1956. Other environmental legislations also followed although these were enacted primarily as economic policies such as Prime Minister John Major's decision to close down the coal industry. London seems to have been successful in controlling air pollution since the WHO ranked it as among the top three least polluted cities.

How do U.K. and U.S. environmental laws compare?
Article Abstract:
The UK Environment Act of 1995 was passed in July 1995. It has some similarities with the US House of Representatives bill HR 1022. Both the UK and the US environmental laws site cost effectiveness as one criterion of remediation. Both countries also have comparable quantitative risk assessment philosophies. However, the two countries differ in their concepts of 'contaminated land' and 'suitable for use.' Both laws aim to improve and protect the environment without causing unnecessary difficulties for industry.
