British Columbia MDs eye union; outcome of budget battle could be lesson for American doctors
Article Abstract:
The British Columbia Medical Association is seeking recognition as the union representative of the province's doctors as it has been unable to negotiate reimbursement terms with the provincial government. British Columbia, unlike some of Canada's other provinces, does not have an agreement that allows it to negotiate with health-care providers, nor does it have in place a dispute-resolution mechanism. The government's imposition of a budget without any negotiations, except monetary issues, is responsible for the union organization plans.
