Bronchopulmonary dysplasia -- no simple solution
Article Abstract:
Further research is needed find ways to reduce the frequency of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in premature infants. This lung disease is common in infants who must receive supplementary oxygen or be placed on a ventilator. However, even very premature infants who do not receive these treatments may develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Corticosteroids are usually used to treat bronchopulmonary dysplasia but a 1999 study found that inhaled corticosteroids did not reduce the frequency of this disease. However, infants so treated did not need oral corticosteroids.
