Brown pressed for NHS cash lifeline
Article Abstract:
Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown is being urged by nursing unions to allot more money to the NHS in his budget. A spokesperson for the RCN claimed that health authorities would overspend by 186 million pounds sterling in 1997. Head of labour relations at the Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association, Roger Kline, claims that the NHS requires at least 2% extra just to remain as it is. There is also a call to raise taxation on tobacco. Unison has already been disappointed by the new government's failure to scrap NHS private finance initiative deals.

Paul Beland, a community midwife from Peterborough Hospitals NHS Trust, UK, wrote to the nursing journal, 'Nursing Times,' about his employer's charge of 20 pounds sterling to pregnant mothers for antenatal classes. The matter came to the attention of the the Health Secretary, Alan Milburn, who banned the trust from making the charge. Beland believes that he broke certain rules in writing the letter, but has no regrets. No disciplinary action is to be taken against him.

Watching the inspectors
Article Abstract:
Experts welcome UK government proposals to improve protection for children and adults in residential homes. Government plans include the establishment of independent commissions to regulate standards of care in nursing and residential homes, and the improvement of inspection services. Experts maintain that the current situation produces variable standards of care, lack of confidence in the staff, and delays in closing down inadequately-run residential homes.
