Building a better federation
Article Abstract:
A group of medical society executives are collaborating in the 'Study of the Federation,' which is studying how medical societies can improve their services for physicians and patients. The 'Federation,' as it is called, plans to develop guidelines by mid-1996 that will help medical associations to work together on issues and to avoid duplicating similar services. The Federation hopes that organized medicine will focus on patient and physician advocacy as well as education and information.

Federation's latest challenge: doing it all for $1,000
Article Abstract:
Physicians and their employers usually pay about $2,000 in fees and dues to join the American Medical Assn, state medical associations and specialty associations. Often employers will pay a maximum of $1,000 in dues, with the rest paid out of pocket but not tax-deductible. It therefore behoves all medical associations, and especially the AMA, to develop a comprehensive package of national, state and specialty dues for $1,000.
