Building a better mousetrap: toward an understanding of osteoporosis
Article Abstract:
Osteoporosis places an enormous burden on the health care system but it is to a large extent preventable. Osteoporosis occurs when bone is lost faster than it is replaced. Bones become weak and are susceptible to fractures. Women are particularly at risk because they may not get enough calcium in their diet. In addition, menopause causes bones to become weaker because estrogen is no longer present to keep them strong. Osteoporosis causes 1.5 million fractures each year. Calcium supplements and regular exercise are the best ways to prevent osteoporosis.

Benefits and risks of medications: challenges for the 21st century
Article Abstract:
The increase in chronic diseases such as diabetes, joint diseases and cardiovascular diseases may cause an increase in adverse drug reactions. About 140,000 people die from drug reactions each year, and treatment costs in the US reach $3 billion. Ninety percent of adverse drug reactions are caused by drug intolerance in a particular patient. These usually have a genetic basis. Drugs can also act as foreign antigens, causing an allergic reaction. Mild side effects occur with narcotics, antibiotics and cardiovascular drugs.

The body's skin frontier and the challenges of wound healing: keloids
Article Abstract:
There are several treatments for keloids, which are abnormal concentrations of scar tissue. They are created during wound healing and most often occur in dark-skinned people. Treatments include surgery, dressings, compression, corticosteroid injections, radiation therapy, laser therapy, and interferon. Researchers are evaluating several anti-allergy drugs, and the anti-cancer drug tamoxifen appears to be effective.
