Burnout associated with caring for people living with HIV/AIDS
Article Abstract:
People who care for patients infected with HIV or AIDS may suffer emotional exhaustion and a lack of personal achievement, but certain mechanisms can be employed to prevent such burnout. Carers may be able to handle their personal grief on the death of a patient after long-term care by attending the funeral. The carers should seek the support of their partner or friends and should pursue other hobbies and interests outside work. The carers should never give patients their home telephone number. They should discuss their work confidentially with other members of the medical team.

Coping with stress
Article Abstract:
Health care workers are particularly prone to occupational stress because of the nature of the work they do. An audit should be carried out to assess the stress which staff are experiencing and then regular audits to assess changes which have occurred as a result of being involved with stress management programmes. Care needs to be taken that these stress management programmes meet the specific needs of staff or they will not be effective. Support groups are very useful, and some staff may need counselling. Managers must also give support to staff.
