CDC sharpens tools for vaccine-safety surveillance
Article Abstract:
The increase in the complexity of vaccine-associated adverse events (VAEs), not the rise in their actual number, has been undermining the ability of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to detect signs of possible VAEs. This has prompted CDC's chief of vaccine safety and development activity, Robert Chen, to adopt newer tools for vaccine-safety surveillance. The new vaccine-safety surveillance tools include the VAERS and the Vaccine Safety Datalink, a risk communications office for information dissemination, and a vaccine development branch to better ensure vaccine safety.

2002 vaccine market: $7 billion
Article Abstract:
The global vaccine market will escalate to $7 billion within five years, with combination vaccines accounting for almost half of the increase. This was the forecast made by pharmaceutical industry analyst Akmal Bhatti of the marketing consulting firm Frost & Sullivan at the 1998 European Center for Pharmaceutical Information Rapid Development of Combination Vaccines Conference in London, England. Bhatti also revealed that belief in the need to comply with pediatric vaccination schedules and improved awareness of the benefits of vaccination are the main commercial drivers of the market.

Unprecedented protection with prime/boost malaria vaccine
Article Abstract:
A malaria vaccine effective both in preventing and treating the disease may soon be developed. In a UK trial, mice treated with a malarial DNA vaccine and a recombinant, live, attenuated vaccinia have been able to protect themselves against challenge malarial sporozoites. For priming, the researchers used a DNA plasmid encoding either the Plasmodium berghei thrombospondin-related adhesive protein or the circumsporozoite protein. The modified vaccinia virus Ankara encoding the priming antigen was used for boosting.
