Cancer Experts Offer Healthy Dose of Skepticism Toward Hype Over Antiangiogenesis Agents
Article Abstract:
Cancer specialists are skeptical that antiangiogenesis agents will be the ultimate cure for cancer. These compounds inhibit the development of new blood vessels, important for tumors to establish a blood supply and grow. Research in mice has shown that angiostatin and endostatin, both antiangiogenesis agents, can eliminate cancer. These compounds have not yet been tested in humans, and researchers expect they will not live up to the claims published widely in the media. Such agents may impair wound healing, yet they may be useful in combination with other anticancer drugs.

Mixed Response to New PSA Screening Study
Article Abstract:
The findings of a large study of prostate cancer indicate that screening with the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test may save lives by catching the disease early. The eight-year, prospective study of 46,193 men determined that deaths from prostate cancer were 69% less common in men who took the PSA test. The study author recommends annual PSA testing in men starting at 50 years of age, and after age 40 for African-American and other men at high risk for prostate cancer. Some researchers have questioned the methods used in the study.
