Justice department calls Medicare payments to Christian Science sanitoria unconstitutional
Article Abstract:
The US Justice Department believes that it is unconstitutional to allow Christian Science nursing homes to receive Medicare and Medicaid funding. Christian Scientists believe that prayer can cure all illness and most prayer practitioners are not licensed nurses or physicians. However, Medicare and Medicaid payments are normally only given for care provided under the direction of a doctor. To get around this, Congress passed a law exempting Christian Science sanitoria from standards imposed on all other hospitals and nursing homes.

Campaign launched to tell physicians, public about emergency contraception
Article Abstract:
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) is launching a media campaign to inform doctors and women about emergency contraception. Studies have shown that regular birth control pills can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of intercourse. This information may be more critical now that the manufacturer of the French abortion pill RU-486 has backed out of an agreement to provide the pill to American women. ACOG plans to distribute over 50,000 kits to physicians, which include a toll-free hotline and Web site.
