Emergency medical services providers should ensure the Y2K compliance of their operations and equipment as this could mean the difference between life and death for patients come the turn of the new millennium. Many medical devices such as diagnostic and monitoring equipment have embedded chips, whose calculations may go awry when the date change problem occurs. Moreover, many medical devices rely on external systems that are susceptible to the millennium bug, such as telecommunications systems.

Will there be an ergonomics standard?
Article Abstract:
There is uncertainty concerning the implementation of an ergonomics standard in spite of the number of cumulative-trauma cases caused by workplace illnesses. Still, proactive companies can reap rewards in safety and savings by effectively using ergonomics. Employers should learn to obtain commitment, seek guidance, examine the workplace, collaborate, involve and educate workers, implement solutions and document changes.

Maurice Hannigan of the California Highway Patrol discusses issues related to traffic and safety. Hannigan believes that drunk driving is a basic cause for many highway deaths.
