Cardiovascular functional disorder and stress among patients having neck-shoulder symptoms
Article Abstract:
Certain cardiovascular symptoms indicative of heightened activity of the sympathetic nervous system may be correlated with neck and shoulder tension and pain. Neck and shoulder symptoms are known to be associated with chronic emotional tension and stress, and stress can produce cardiovascular symptoms such as high blood pressure. Twelve female secretaries with neck tension and nine female secretaries free of symptoms reported on symptoms of pain and psychological stress. They then had a series of tests designed to evaluate differences in parasympathetic and sympathetic regulation of the cardiovascular system by the autonomic nervous system. Women in the neck tension group experienced more pain and scored higher on a scale measuring stress. They had faster heart rates, probably due to increased sympathetic activity related to pain. No differences were found between groups in aspects of cardiovascular functioning related to parasympathetic regulation. Blood pressures were also similar.

An unusual cause of shoulder pain
Article Abstract:
The increasing use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a diagnostic tool has shown compression of the suprascapular nerve to be a relatively common cause of shoulder pain. In the case in study, an electromyelograph and nerve conduction tests pinpointed the area which was the source of the problem. MRI would have been preferable as a first diagnostic tool, because of its ability to present fine resolution images of soft tissues, but was not available in this particular office.
