Dental therapeutic indications for the newer long-acting macrolide antibiotics
Article Abstract:
Long-acting macrolide antibiotics have been developed but their expense prevents their widespread use. Macrolide antibiotics are the class of drugs that includes erythromycin. Erythromycin is often used instead of penicillin for patients who are allergic to penicillin. However, erythromycin has significant side effects, including nausea and vomiting. It also interacts with other drugs. The long-acting macrolides include clarithromycin, azithromycin and dirithromycin. They only need to be taken once or twice a day and have fewer side effects and interactions. Unfortunately, they cost $3 to $6 per tablet, compared to erythromycin's cost of less than 30 cents per tablet.

Performance of high-speed dental handpieces subjected to simulated clinical use and sterilization
Article Abstract:
Two dentists provide a comprehensive evaluation of nine high-speed handpieces. All were tested with a handpiece wear tester for up to 1,000 use/sterilization cycles. No handpiece was superior to any other on all of the parameters tested. These parameters included longevity, power, turbine speed, fiberoptic transmission, eccentricity, noise, chuck performance, visibility angle, interocclusal clearance and water coolant spray pattern. Dentists should choose the handpiece that best meets their needs.
